“Alight” is painted in colored pencil and archival ink on barrier paper, depicting a dragonfly resting on a nearly spent sunflower. At the end of summer, a dragonfly alights on a browning sunflower. While drawing this image of a seasons’ ending, I thought about life and death, endings, and transformation. Seasonal plants and animals die, are harvested, recycled and absorbed. For us, we can anticipate our endings, our new beginnings. But what does the dragonfly itself know? And the sunflower? What do they feel? The now and impermanence may or may not be part of their conception. Here, the dragonfly is partially indistinguishable from the sunflower on which it rests. Shortly they may be intermingled and their existence no longer separate.
